The workshop organised by Giovanni Aloisio (CMCC), Graham Riley (UNIMAN), Carlos Osuna (METEOSWISS) and Sandro Fiore (CMCC) within the framework of ESiWACE2 was hosted by DKRZ with the local support by Dela Spickermann and Florian Ziemen under the supervision of the ESiWACE2 Coordinator Joachim Biercamp. The workshop was funded by the Horizon 2020 project ESiWACE2.

Due to the situation with COVID-19, the event was held as a virtual conference with approximately 143 participants mainly from Europe and US, but also from Brazil, India and Israel.
Scientists working in the fields of earth system modeling, machine learning, exascale hardware/computing, and programming models attended the workshop, receiving and exchanging information about the latest developments in those fields, also involving HPC experts.

The agenda of workshop was organised in three sessions, for a total of 17 talks, focusing on Exascale hardware, Programming models and hardware interplay, and Machine Learning. Despite being virtual, the workshop was successful in all three sessions with a lot attendees and questions for speakers during the Q&A.
