WP1 - Support to effective applications
Earth System Models (ESMs) run on emerging hardware like ARM and RISC-V, with emphasis on Fortran support and performance analysis. Co-design between hardware and compiler developers and HPC experts optimizes applications, compilers, and libraries across diverse architectures.
The weather and climate benchmark suite (called HPCW) supports performance evaluation of ESM workflows across platforms and includes standard metrics like CPMIP. A common ESM software stack is improved using automated build tools to simplify deployment and encourage reuse across HPC centers.
Containerized ESMs are developed and deployed on EuroHPC systems to improve usability and enable ensemble workflows. The process includes documentation and training to support adoption by modeling groups and wider user communities.
