Registration Open for the 9th ENES HPC Workshop on High-Performance Computing for Weather and Climate

ESiWACE3, in collaboration with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 9th ENES HPC Workshop – High-Performance Computing for Weather and Climate.

Taking place from **19–21 May 2026 **(lunchtime to lunchtime) at SMHI in Norrköping, Sweden, this workshop continues a well-established series of community events dedicated to advancing high-performance computing (HPC) for weather and climate modelling.

As Earth system models evolve toward exascale performance, kilometre-scale resolution, heterogeneous hardware architectures, and increasingly AI-enhanced workflows, the scientific and technical challenges facing the community are growing rapidly. Addressing these challenges requires close collaboration between domain scientists, software engineers, and HPC specialists.

A key forum for the Earth system modelling and HPC communities

The ENES HPC Workshop series has become a **central meeting point **within the European Network for Earth System Modelling (ENES) and beyond. It provides a unique forum for sharing:

  • Practical experience from operational and research modelling systems
  • Performance optimisation strategies and porting efforts
  • Emerging technologies and tools
  • Approaches to handling growing data volumes and workflow complexity

By bringing together** modelling centres, HPC facilities, and technology providers** from across Europe and internationally, the workshop fosters knowledge exchange and new collaborations at the forefront of climate and weather computing.

Thematic focus of the 2026 edition

The 9th edition will be structured around four half-day thematic sessions, each addressing a key dimension of next-generation Earth system modelling:

  • Session 1 – Collaboration Conveners: Mario Acosta (BSC) and Joachim Biercamp (DKRZ)
  • Session 2 – Performance and Accelerators Conveners: Jean-Christophe Rioual and Xavier Yepes (BSC)
  • Session 3 – AI & Machine Learning Convener: Italo Epicoco
  • Session 4 – Data Conveners: Pier Luigi Vidale, Bryan Lawrence, and Karsten Peters-von Gehlen

The final agenda, including speakers and presentation titles, will be published soon.
