ENES HPC Workshop 2026: Preliminary agenda

ENES HPC Workshop 2026: Preliminary agenda highlights key challenges in climate and weather computing

The Centre of Excellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe (ESiWACE3) has released the preliminary agenda for the 9th ENES HPC Workshop, taking place from 19 to 21 May 2026 at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) in Norrköping, Sweden.

As the climate and weather modelling community moves toward exascale computing, kilometre-scale resolution, and increasing integration of artificial intelligence, the technical landscape is rapidly evolving. The ENES HPC Workshop continues to serve as a key meeting point for scientists, software developers and HPC experts to exchange experiences and discuss practical solutions.

A programme structured around four key themes

This year’s edition is organised around four main thematic sessions that reflect the most pressing challenges and opportunities in the field:

Collaboration The workshop will explore how European and international initiatives are strengthening connections between infrastructures, modelling centres and technology providers. Topics include research infrastructures, Digital Twin developments and emerging AI factories.

Performance and Accelerators A central focus will be on performance portability and the transition to heterogeneous architectures. Sessions will feature real-world experiences in porting models to GPUs, co-design approaches and optimisation strategies for next-generation systems. ** AI and Machine Learning** The growing role of AI in climate and weather modelling will be addressed through contributions on neural forecasting systems, foundation models and hybrid workflows that combine physics-based and data-driven approaches.

Data As data volumes and complexity continue to grow, the workshop will also examine challenges related to data infrastructure, compression, workflows and the requirements of both large-scale simulations and AI applications.

Contributions from across the community

The programme brings together speakers from leading organisations including ECMWF, CMCC, DKRZ, BSC, EPCC, Mercator Ocean, Columbia University and others. Presentations will cover a wide range of developments, from operational forecasting systems and model optimisation to AI-driven methodologies and data management strategies.

A key event for the ENES community

Held biennially, the ENES HPC Workshop has established itself as a central forum within the European Network for Earth System Modelling (ENES), fostering collaboration across institutions and disciplines.

The 2026 edition will once again provide a space for open discussion, knowledge exchange and the identification of future directions for HPC in climate and weather modelling. Registration now open Registration for the workshop is now open and will close on 17 April 2026. 👉 https://www.esiwace.eu/event/enes-hpc-workshop/ 👉 Download the preliminary programme
